Illustration of The Five Elements

The Five Elements describe five functional movements within the body.

They are not symbolic.

They are physiological and emotional patterns.

Wood

Growth, movement, vision

Liver and Gallbladder

Fire

Circulation, connection, nervous system regulation

Heart and Small Intestine

Earth

Digestion, nourishment, stability

Spleen and Stomach

Metal

Respiration, boundaries, immunity

Lung and Large Intestine

Water

Storage, regeneration, resilience

Kidney and Bladder

Symptoms often reflect imbalance within or between these elements.

Acupuncture restores cooperation between them so the body functions as a unified system rather than a collection of parts.
